I've been thinking about what makes art. I am a well educated artist. I minored in art and took just six hours short of a major and worked full time as a potter and sculptor for a number of years. I've drawn and painted and have reached a fairly high level of skill in both. I have been a photographer using high definition photography when that meant using a 5X7 or 8X10 bellows land camera. I did zone system B&W photography that showed in many galleries when I was a young man. But nothing has been so hard to learn and master for me as fractal art. I have been at it for 10 years now and just now feel I have the facility with it to call myself an artist in the genre. And I am pushing it at that. There is so much more to learn to really master it. In fact I don't think one ever does master everything there is to learn in fractal art and science.
When I spoke with friends recently and told them that in my retirement I had become a serious fractal artist they laughed and told me that fractals are not art. I heard the same thing about photography 30 years ago. I was even told by painters that pottery was not art, but craft. The reality is that all art is a craft, at its most basic level; because it all requires the mastery of a number of techniques that are the craft aspect and technical aspect of the art and everyone has to learn them to master any art genre. Fractal art is no different. It takes years to learn the craft aspect of it before one can really express oneself adequately as an artist. In fact the craft aspect of fractal artistry is the most difficult one of any art form I have attempted to date. And I would say I was fairly good in most forms of art I have tried to master.
More than anything I have wanted to be a fractal artist whose style is easily recognized and I believe I am getting there, but have some way to go yet. I have also found the community of fractalists to be helpful and a little bit less haughty about their art and artwork. They are willing to help you learn and readily support your work with kind comments. So if you are a fractalist and other artists tell you that fractal art is not art. Tell them to take it from a true artist who has been one all his life. Tell them it is an art and one of the truly most difficult one's to thoroughly master. And secondly, be proud you have chosen to be a fractal artist and keep honing that craft so you can express yourself artfully even better.
